Staff FAQ

How diverse is DWT?
Diversity and inclusion are central to who we are and what we do at Davis Wright Tremaine. We define diversity not only in terms of race, gender, or sexual orientation, but also in ideas, perspectives, personality, work style, age, and more. Diversity and inclusion are what enable us to work smarter, bring out the best of what each individual has to offer, and ultimately build strong and lasting connections with each other, our clients, and our communities. We are committed to building a law firm where talented professionals of all backgrounds can flourish and succeed. We recognize that one size does not fit all and our goal is to make sure that creativity and innovation are encouraged and rewarded. We strongly believe that diversity and inclusion are fundamental to these efforts.
Does the firm offer domestic partner benefits?
A domestic partner is offered the same coverage as a spouse, except premiums are paid on an after-tax basis. We offer coverage on medical, dental and supplemental life insurance for spouses and domestic partners.
Do you have a paid parental leave policy?
Yes, we have a paid parental leave policy for both exempt and non-exempt employees that provide one-half of their pay for up to eight (8) weeks during leave. Staff are eligible for this benefit after one year of employment. Sick and vacation hours, to the extent accrued and available, would make up the other half of their pay unless applicable law requires otherwise.
Do you provide child and/or elder care options?
There is a discounted backup emergency childcare/eldercare program available and can be used up to 10 days/uses per year. There are copays associated with this benefit. We offer dependent care flexible spending account which allows you to put aside up to $5,000 per household using pre-tax dollars.
Does the firm offer public transit assistance?
The firm does offer assistance with public transportation; however, it varies by office. Staff also have the option to set aside pretax dollars to use towards public transit and parking expenses.
Are there educational and training benefits?
Reimbursement for education expenses is available to an employee for pre-approved educational opportunities (seminars, workshops, training programs, certification courses, etc.) that apply directly to the staff member’s assigned duties. Successful completion is required for reimbursement.
When does coverage for health benefits begin?
Medical and dental coverage begins on the first day of the month following an employee’s date of hire. If the hire date falls on the first of a month, coverage begins on that day.
What type of training do you provide for staff?
Each employee receives new hire computer training during their first few days in the office. Employees will also receive training specific to their office, department, and/or skill level to their position. Employees may work directly with their manager/supervisor to receive additional training as needed.
How does the review/evaluation process work?
DWT takes a more progressive approach to performance than a standard evaluation process. Two times per year we conduct a check-in, where managers and their staff meet to discuss their successes, challenges, and create SMART goals to achieve in the next six months. These check-ins are memorialized in writing and placed in the employee’s personnel file.
