This is an exciting opportunity to work for one of the top law firms in the U.S.! Davis Wright Tremaine LLP is looking for a Retirement Plan and Compliance Specialist to join our team in the Seattle office.


This position will assist with yearly Affordable Care Act (ACA), federal, state and city health & welfare reporting mandates.  The Retirement Plan & Compliance Specialist will play a critical role in the day-to-day administration of the firm’s 401(k) Profit Sharing Plan and Cash Balance Plan by ensuring the plans are administered accurately and in compliance with all applicable state and federal guidelines, regulations, and plan documents.  This position will also play a critical role with the annual plan audits, participant education and plan communications while constantly exploring opportunities to expand and enhance plan features and increase participant engagement.

On a typical day you will:

401(k) and Profit Sharing Plan


  1. Monitor and coordinate with recordkeeper and payroll regarding eligibility for 401(k) (at hire - auto enrollment) and Profit Sharing (staff only, after two years of employment)
  2. Assist with changes from auto enrollment as requested
  3. Audit, reconcile and coordinate funding of 401(k) contributions and loan payments from appropriate payrolls
  4. Audit, reconcile and coordinate recordkeeper calculations for funding of quarterly staff Profit Sharing contributions and communication thereof to participants through payroll


Contract Partners

  • Monitor and coordinate with recordkeeper and Payroll regarding eligibility for 401(k) and Profit Sharing contributions
  • Gather Contract Partner budgeted incomes annually
  • Communicate maximum contribution amounts and funding options annually
  • Coordinate contribution and funding elections with recordkeeper and Payroll
  • Implement changes to initial elections as received
  • Monitor Contract Partner Profit Sharing Plan opt-outs



Equity Partners

  • Communicate changes regarding funding streams for Partners transitioning from Contract to Equity status
  • Communicate with Contract Partner Profit Sharing opt outs to Equity Partner required Profit Sharing status
  • Communicate with Equity Partners required Profit Sharing contributions and 401(k) opportunities annually


All Participants

  • Review and transmit Qualified Domestic Relations Orders (QDROs) to recordkeeper for processing
  • Serve as liaison between recordkeeper, Payroll, Benefits Manager and Employee Benefits Committee as needed to resolve issues presented by plan participants, beneficiaries, and alternate payees
  • Conduct group and individual educational presentations with participants regarding their retirement benefits
  • Work with recordkeeper and Consultant on communication and educational opportunities to expand and enhance participants knowledge of the plan features
  • Serve as primary contact for annual plan audits, coordinating with external auditor, actuary, recordkeeper and internal resources
  • Audit daily participant contribution and loan change files from recordkeeper to ensure accuracy
  • Audit monthly plan administration files from recordkeeper to ensure accuracy
  • Ensure retirement plans are administered in accordance with Plan documents and appropriate State and Federal guidelines and regulations
  • Maintain awareness of legal and regulatory changes or developments affecting retirement plans


Cash Balance Plan

  • Keep eligibility and participant lists updated
  • In coordination with Employee Benefits Committee Chair and Benefits Manager, communicate eligibility and tier change opportunities to Equity Partners, transitioning Contract Partners and C-Suite Employees
  • Distribute annual Plan statements and provide replacements as requested
  • Process cash balance plan distribution requests at appropriate times
  • Provide information to Plan Actuary as needed
  • Ensure annual FAQ document is up to date
  • Coordinate with Payroll and Accounting to adjust C-Suite compensation to account for Cash Balance Plan contributions
  • Process Plan contributions


Other Compliance Matters

  • Assist with reconciliation, production and filing of annual ACA 1095-B and 1095-C statements, along with any applicable state reporting mandates
  • Assist with calculation and filing of San Francisco Health Care Security Ordinance


Join us if you have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Human Resources or related field
  • Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) or willingness to work towards certification, preferred
  • At least three years progressive experience in the administration of retirement benefit plans
  • Prior law firm or professional service firm experience preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to clearly explain retirement plan options in easily understood terms; comfortable dealing with all levels of personnel at the firm
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Word and PowerPoint
  • Advanced working knowledge of MS Excel
  • Working knowledge of Human Resource Information System (HRIS), preferably UKG
  • Ability to stay organized and manage multiple tasks and competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Cash Balance Pension or similar Defined Benefit (DB) plan experience preferred
  • QDRO experience preferred
