This is an exciting opportunity to work for one of the top law firms in the U.S.  Davis Wright Tremaine LLP is seeking an experienced Pro Bono Manager to join our team in Seattle. This position is responsible for managing firm-wide pro bono efforts; sourcing new pro bono opportunities; developing strategies for supporting and enhancing pro bono participation; identifying opportunities and directing attorneys for professional development; integrating pro bono and attorney professional development goals; ensuring adherence to firm policies; representing the firm to legal services and related communities; and publicizing the firm’s pro bono achievements.

  •  Manage DWT’s firm wide pro bono program
    •  Align pro bono opportunities with attorney needs and interests by serving as the primary connector between attorneys, practice groups and outside organizations that provide pro bono opportunities, CLE’s and trainings, and technical support.
    • Research the pro bono needs of local communities with DWT offices and identify opportunities that address the needs and interests of individual attorneys and practice groups.
    • Collaborate with community partners on the development of emerging legal services projects as they complement the interests and needs of our attorneys.
    • Be the firm’s expert on pro bono policies and procedures, respond to attorney and staff inquiries and be the clearinghouse for referrals, legal information materials, forms and community resources.
    • Be knowledgeable about and implement programmatic best practices.
    • Attend internal and external pro bono-related meetings, conferences and workshops as appropriate.
    • Facilitate integration of pro bono opportunities with attorney development goals and training programs and policies, developing appropriate and positive approaches.
    • Work with office managers to consult on and recommend pro bono giving decisions and assist with charitable giving processes.
    • Manage the litigation practice group’s participation in King County Prosecutor’s Office  Felony Trial Fellowship.
  • Ensure policy compliance
    • Screen requests for pro bono services from outside individuals and entities including referrals from firm clients. Identify and head off potential quality assurance concerns such as positional conflicts, and reassigning cases of departing attorneys.
    • Perform analysis upon intake of potential new pro bono matters for compliance with policies, conflicts, billable credit eligibility and appropriate supervision, assigning client/matter numbers and compiling statistics and record keeping.
  • Manage Pro Bono Committee
    •  Provide staff leadership and consultation to the Pro Bono Committee concerning development of new or modified firm policies and attorney participation strategies, and assist in drafting the committee’s annual report to the Executive Committee.
    • Provide input regarding committee membership.
    • Maintain the committee’s key document.
  • Recognition for the firm
    •  Collaborate across departments to produce and distribute internal and external reports and communications regarding the firm’s pro bono service and initiatives; including maintaining the firm’s portal content.
    • Describe the firm’s important cases, victories and contributions by responding to survey requests (e.g. ABA Pro Bono Challenge Report, NALP, bar associations, etc.).
    • Coordinate with Marketing & Business Development Department regarding support for key client relationships through sponsorships and contributions.
    • Public speaking at pro bono events, presentations to new and summer associates, both within the firm and public-facing.
Join us if you have
  •  7+ years of experience providing legal pro bono support required; experience in a large, multi-office law firm is and with law-related nonprofits preferred.
  • BS/BA degree or equivalent experience required; JD preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office products (Word XP, Excel, Outlook).
  • Demonstrated ability to employ independent judgment in developing strategies and approaches to strengthen the firm’s pro bono commitments, be self-motivated and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously, work under pressure and meet deadlines, required.
  • Ability to work discreetly with highly confidential and sensitive information.
  • Ability to write clearly and succinctly in a variety of communication settings and styles, excellent grammar, spelling and proofreading skills. Ability to pay close attention to detail and use resources effectively and efficiently.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to maintain effective working relationships and communicate verbally and in writing in a professional, courteous manner with clients, outside contacts, lawyers and staff.
  • Ability to travel to offices and conferences.
